Henry David Thoreau

“Can’t see the forest for the trees;”

that lesson sounds pretty attainable to me.

I’ve found my Walden, tucked away in the woods

and at night it robs my mind of its “shoulds.”

Now I sit in the sun and the sparkling dirt,

as the breeze sweeps in, I put on that red shirt

—that one you loved with the lacy top—

remember that date at the coffee shop?

I don’t know why then I couldn’t see

that you could not look into me.

I know I’m gonna miss your smell,

but I couldn’t stand knowing you so well.

You’ve been standing at a baggage claim

and you let the waiting drive you insane.

I’m awake from that nightmare and now a found dream,

a place to replenish when I’ve run out of steam.

And if you’d widen your vision, you could come find me,

in my home in the forest, but you can’t see it for the trees.
